Development of aluminium-silicon alloys with improved properties at elevated temperature

چکیده
Aluminium-silicon alloys have gained increasing market share in the automotive and aerospace industry because of increased environmental demands. These alloys have a high strength-to-weight ratio, good corrosion resistance, castability and recycling potential. However, variations in properties and limited performance at elevated temperature are restricting these alloys from use at elevated temperatures. During the last decades, researchers have investigated ways to improve the properties at elevated temperatures. However, the effect of some transition elements is not well understood. The aim of this work is to investigate the aluminium-silicon alloys with addition of cobalt and nickel for high temperature applications. Tensile testing and hardness testing were conducted on samples produced by directional solidification in a Bridgman furnace with condition generating a microstructure corresponding to that obtained in high pressure die casting, i.e. SDAS ~ 10 μm. The results show that cobalt and nickel improve the tensile properties up to 230 °C.

Effect of elevated temperatures on the drawability of aluminium sheet components
Because of the need for weight reduction in transport industry, in order to save energy as well as to reduce CO2-emission, the use of light weight aluminium sheet is taken increasingly into consideration [1]. But although aluminium is lighter than steel, the formability is less, hence press operations are often more critical. Alloys used are typically 5xxx alloys for inner panels because of the...
متن کاملExtrapolation of Transport Properties and Figure of Merit of a Thermoelectric Material
The accurate determination of the thermoelectric properties of a material becomes increasingly difficult as the temperature rises. However, it is the properties at elevated temperatures that are important if thermoelectric generator efficiency is to be improved. It is shown that the dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, might be expected to rise with temperature for a given material provided that ...
متن کاملStructure and Fracture Characteristics of Magnesium - Aluminium Alloys under Elevated Temperatures
Magnesium alloys are primarily used in aeronautical and automobile industry in wide variety of structural characteristics because of their favourable combination of tensile strength (160 to 365 MPa), elastic modulus (45 GPa), and low density (1 740 kg/m), which is two-thirds that of aluminium). Magnesium alloys have high strength-to-weight ratio (tensile strength/density), comparable to those o...
متن کاملEffects of Casting Speed and Runner Angle on Macrosegregation of Aluminium-Copper Alloy.
Abstract During the solidification of binary metal alloys, chemical heterogeneities at product scale over a long distance range (1cm-1m) develop and this has detrimental effect on the resulting mechanical properties of cast products. Macrosegregation is of great concern to alloy manufacturers and end users as this problem persist. In this study, the use of process parameters namely casting spee...
متن کاملINFLUENCE OF MECHANICAL ALLOYING AND LEAD CONTENT ON MICROSTRUCTURE, HARDNESS AND TRIBOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR OF 6061 ALUMINIUM ALLOYS
In the present work, one batch of prealloyed 6061Al powder was processed by mixing and another one was ball milled with varying amount of lead content (0-15 vol. %). These powders were compacted at 300MPa and sintered at 590˚C under N2. The instrumented hardness and the young’s modulus of as-sintered 6061Al-Pb alloys were examined as a function of lead content and processing route. The we...
